How Far in Advance Should You Book Hawaii from SJC?

Timing Tips for the Best Deals

A Bay Area travel agent’s honest guide to booking Hawaii at the right time — so you’re not overpaying.

Planning a Hawaii trip from San Jose is exciting. But one of the most common questions I hear from Bay Area families, couples, and solo travelers is: “When should I actually book?”

Book too early and you might lock in a rate that drops later. Book too late and you’re stuck with middle seats, overpriced hotels, and the last rental car on the lot — a minivan with 80,000 miles on it. The sweet spot is real, and knowing it can save your family hundreds of dollars.

Here’s exactly what I tell my clients.

The Short Answer

For most Hawaii trips from SJC, the sweet spot is 3 to 6 months in advance for flights, and 2 to 4 months out for hotels and car rentals. But it depends heavily on when you’re traveling — and that’s where most people get tripped up.

Flights: When to Book from SJC to Hawaii

Peak Season (Summer & Holidays) — Book 4 to 6 Months Out

If you’re traveling June through August, or over Thanksgiving, Christmas, or spring break — book as early as possible. These windows are slammed with Bay Area families, and direct flights from SJC fill up fast. By the time you’re searching 6 weeks out for a July trip, you’re often looking at $200–$400 more per ticket than you would have paid in February.

Shoulder Season (April–May, September–October) — Book 2 to 4 Months Out

These are genuinely the best months to visit Hawaii — fewer crowds, lower prices, and still beautiful weather. Airlines don’t fill these flights as quickly, so you have a little more flexibility. That said, don’t push it past the 6-week mark or prices start creeping back up.

Off-Peak (November, early December, January–March) — Book 6 to 10 Weeks Out

This is where patient travelers can find real deals. Airlines sometimes drop fares on these dates to fill seats, and if you have flexibility on travel days, flying mid-week (Tuesday or Wednesday) from SJC almost always beats weekend pricing by $50–$100 per person.

The Airlines That Fly Direct from SJC to Hawaii

  • Shoulder season: 2 to 3 months is usually fine, though popular properties still fill up.
  • Off-peak: 4 to 6 weeks can work, but don’t count on your first choice being available.

One thing people consistently underestimate: ocean view vs. ocean front matters a lot in Hawaii, and those rooms go first. If waking up to an unobstructed view of the Pacific is on your list, book early or tell me as your travel agent to prioritize it.

If there’s one booking mistake Bay Area travelers consistently make, it’s this: they nail the flights and the hotel, then forget about the rental car until two weeks before the trip.

Maui, Kauai, and the Big Island essentially require a car. And rental car inventory in Hawaii can get shockingly thin — especially after the 2021 rental car shortage that left tourists stranded and paying $700/day for whatever was left.

My advice:

  • Book your rental car at the same time as your flights — even if you cancel and rebook later
  • Most rentals allow free cancellation, so there’s no risk in holding a reservation early
  • For families, book an SUV or minivan — you’ll want the room for beach gear, strollers, and luggage

That said, fare alerts work best for flexible travelers. If you have specific dates locked in — school schedules, work calendars, a family reunion — chasing a slightly better fare for weeks often isn’t worth the mental energy. Book at a fair price and enjoy the anticipation.

This 7-day itinerary is designed with families in mind: a smart mix of adventure, relaxation, culture, and kid-friendly fun — without trying to cram in everything at once.

Before You Leave the Bay Area

Flights from SJC to Maui

Southwest, United, and Alaska Airlines all offer direct flights from San Jose to Kahului Airport (OGG) on Maui. Flight time is roughly 5.5 to 6 hours. Pro tip: book morning departures so you land with plenty of afternoon daylight to enjoy.

Best Time to Visit

Maui is gorgeous year-round, but Bay Area families tend to travel during summer (June–August) and the holiday break (December–January). April through early June is our favorite “sweet spot” — whale season overlaps (through May), crowds are thinner, and prices drop slightly after spring break.

Bay Area weather has nothing in common with Maui, so pack accordingly:

  • Reef-safe sunscreen (required in Hawaii — chemical sunscreens are banned)
  • Light layers for Haleakala sunrise (it gets cold — around 40°F at the summit)
  • Water shoes for snorkeling and rocky beaches
  • A light rain jacket — Maui’s north and east sides can get showers
  • Kids’ snorkel gear (or rent locally — we can arrange)

Day 1 — Arrival & Settle In (West Maui / Kaanapali)

You’ve landed. Breathe in that warm plumeria-scented air and remind yourself: you’re in Maui.

After picking up your rental car at OGG (I recommend an SUV or minivan for families), head straight to your resort in Kaanapali or Wailea — two of the best family-friendly areas on the island.

  • Check in and hit the pool — the kids have been on a plane for 6 hours, they’ve earned it
  • Stroll the Kaanapali Beachfront Walk for a casual first sunset
  • Dinner at Hula Grill on the beach — open-air seating, fresh fish, great for families

🌅 Don’t Miss: The cliff-diving ceremony at Black Rock (Pu’u Keka’a) at sunset — a nightly Kaanapali tradition that kids absolutely love.

Day 2 — Snorkel, Sea Turtles & Lahaina Town

Start the morning with Maui’s #1 family activity: snorkeling. Head to Kapalua Bay or Napili Bay — both calm, protected, and teeming with sea turtles and tropical fish.

  • Book your Haleakala sunrise reservation in advance at recreation.gov (they sell out weeks ahead)
  • Dress in layers — it’s cold at the summit, even in summer
  • After sunrise, explore Upcountry Maui — the cool, green farming community above Kula
  • Stop at Surfing Goat Dairy for a farm tour the kids will love
  • Lunch at Kula Lodge for gorgeous views over the valley

⚠️ Important: The drive from Kaanapali to the Haleakala summit takes about 1.5–2 hours. Set multiple alarms. It’s worth every groggy minute.

Day 5 — Molokini Crater Snorkel & Afternoon at the Beach

Today is all about the water. A snorkel boat trip to Molokini Crater — a partially submerged volcanic crater just off the coast — is one of the best snorkeling experiences in all of Hawaii.
